The Story Behind the Artwork
Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, is one of Thailand’s most celebrated landmarks. Rising above the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, its central prang is covered with intricate porcelain details that catch the changing light throughout the day.
I photographed this planet during a short professional assignment in Bangkok. My work regularly takes me to different cities and countries, and whenever time allows, I explore the places around me in search of inspiration.
Over the years, this has become an important part of the Little Big World journey. Every destination offers new stories, new architecture and new perspectives. Some locations become photographs. Others become planets.
Wat Arun immediately stood out.
Creating this artwork was far more challenging than it may appear. Unlike many of my planets, the entire image was photographed handheld in a busy environment. I spent a long time exploring the temple grounds, waiting for the right alignment between the architecture, the light and the atmosphere.
The moment finally arrived during the middle of the afternoon, when the sun aligned perfectly with the central tower. For a brief instant, the temple seemed to glow from within.
During the capture, a small bird appeared near the top of the composition and remained visible in the final artwork. Technically, it is only a tiny detail. For me, it became something much more meaningful. An unexpected presence that felt perfectly placed within the scene, almost like a quiet spiritual symbol accompanying the creation of the image.
The creation of the final planet required extensive post-production and careful reconstruction of the environment. What began as a complex handheld capture gradually transformed into a miniature world suspended between reality and imagination.
When transformed into a planet, Wat Arun revealed something unexpected. The temple became a beacon emerging from its own miniature world, surrounded by trees, sky and light.
Today, Wat Arun Planet represents one of those rare moments where travel, patience and creativity aligned perfectly. A reminder that some of the most memorable discoveries happen between professional assignments, when curiosity leads the way.
