The Story Behind the Artwork
Place des Terreaux is one of Lyon’s most iconic public squares. Located between the City Hall and the Museum of Fine Arts, it is dominated by the monumental Bartholdi Fountain, a masterpiece created by the same sculptor who designed the Statue of Liberty.
For me, Planète Terreaux has always felt like the spiritual sister of Planète Bellecour.
Both artworks are deeply connected to the identity of Lyon and required patience before they could finally come to life. In the case of Terreaux, I had to wait nearly two years. Renovation works, multiple visits and countless tests prevented me from achieving the image I had imagined.
I knew exactly what I wanted: the Bartholdi Fountain dominating the centre of the composition while the surrounding architecture reflected around it like a protective crown. The challenge was finding the right balance between the square, the water, the reflections and the unique geometry that would emerge once transformed into a planet.
When the conditions finally aligned, the result exceeded my expectations. The fountain became the heart of a powerful miniature world, while the reflections of the surrounding buildings created an almost organic texture across the surface of the sphere.
Today, this artwork stands alongside Planète Bellecour as one of the defining pieces of my Lyon collection. Together, they represent two complementary visions of the city: one built around a king, the other around a fountain, both transformed into timeless worlds suspended between reality and imagination.
