The Story Behind the Artwork

Place Bellecour is one of the most iconic landmarks in Lyon and the largest pedestrian square in Europe. At its centre stands the equestrian statue of Louis XIV, a symbol that has watched over the city for generations.

My relationship with Bellecour goes far beyond photography. In fact, the very first Little Big World planet I ever created was photographed here in 2014. What started as a simple panoramic experiment unexpectedly revealed an entirely new artistic universe and became the foundation of a project that would later grow across multiple countries and continents.

Three years later, I returned to Bellecour with a new vision.

I wanted to create a planet worthy of the scale and symbolism of the location itself. To achieve this, I chose to photograph the square on May 1st, one of the rare days when this usually busy public space becomes almost completely empty. The conditions were perfect: soft blue tones in the sky, moving clouds and an unusual sense of calm at the heart of the city.

In this miniature world, Louis XIV rises between earth and sky like a timeless guardian. The immense square folds around him, transforming one of Lyon’s most familiar places into a dreamlike planet suspended in space.

The first Bellecour planet was published by the City of Lyon and became the starting point of what would later evolve into the Little Big World collection.

More than an artwork, Planète Bellecour represents the beginning of a journey. It embodies the origins of the Little Big World collection and remains one of its most personal and symbolic creations.
